자연과 다른 생물종과 우리의 관계는 통제와 착취를 기반으로 인간에 의해 구축된 것이다. 우리는 식물을 단지 살아가는데 필요한 자원으로 여긴다. 그러나 어밍은 식물의 삶에 다른 감수성과 존중을 보여주며, 우리가 무심코 잊고 지나치기 쉬운 식물 세계에 대한 인식에 변화를 요구한다. 어밍은 식물이 반응하고, 인지하며, 소통하고, 전략적인 유기체로서 자신들의 환경을 감지할 수 있다는 사실을 상기시킨다.^1)

전시장 입구의 작은 온실(<그들이 사는 세상>, 2023-2024)에서는 작가가 지난 여름 내내 키우고, 자란 열매는 요리의 재료가 되기도 한, 토마토를 볼 수 있다. 5미터 길이의 박스구조물(<선번>, 2023) 안에서는 잎을 피워내는 식물을 볼 수 있다.그 식물은 테라스 계단의 구석, 무시되고 중요하지 않는 공간에서 자라났다. 어밍은 이 생명의 성장을 기록하고(<질경이, 너는 느낀다>, 2023) 테라스 계단 구석을 닮은 구조물을 만들어 보여준다. 우리가 하찮거나 보이지 않는다고 생각할 수 있는 작은 구석의 식물이 이제 갤러리 공간에서 우리 눈앞에 존재하게 되었다. 이 생명체들은 삶, 성장, 그리고 소멸이 어디서 어떻게 일어나는지에 대한 새로운 통찰과 감각을 제공한다.

식물을 키우고, 그들을 면밀히 관찰하며, 식물이 환경 변화에 어떻게 감지하고, 인식하며, 반응하는지, 다시 말해 식물이 어떻게 존재하게 되고 생존하는지를 이해하는 과정은 예술가가 자신의 몸과 자신을 더 잘 이해하려는 하나의 메커니즘이자 과정이 되었다. 어밍은 스스로 식물이 되어 눈을 감고 빛을 감지하고 그 느낀 것과 눈을 감고 본 것을 점,선,면으로 남긴다.(<해와 눈을 마주쳐보라>, 2023) 온실에서 실제 식물을 만나고 스스로 식물이 되어보는 활동을 통해 전시 《식물-빛-되기》에서 식물과 교감하는 특별한 시간이 되길 바란다.

Our relationship with nature and other living beings is a human construct based on control and exploitation, since we regard plants as nothing more than a resource for our well-being. Eom Ing shows a different sensibility and respect to plant life, helping to change our perception of the vegetal world, one we can learn from even if we neglect and forget to pay attention to. As the artist reminds us, plants are responsive, aware, communicative, and strategic organisms that can sense their environment.1)

At the entrance of the exhibition, in a green house(<Their World>, 2023-2024), we can see tomatoes that the artist grew over last summer, which have also become ingredients for cooking. In the 5 meter long structure(<Sunburn>, 2023), there is a plant video projected onto a wall inside. A neglected, unimportance space in the corner of the gallery stairs in the terrace, a plant has emerged. Eom Ing has recorded the growth of this life (<Plantain, You Feel It>, 2023) and it’s projected in the exhibition in a structure that resembles the corner of the stairs in the terrace. What we might consider too insignificant or invisible, the little corner plant is now present in the gallery space right in front of us. Creatures that gives us a different insight and sensing into where or how life, growth and decay, happens.

Growing plants, closely observing them, understanding how plants sense, recognise and respond to environmental changes, in other words, how plants come to be and survive became a mechanism and process for the artist in trying to better understand her body and herself. Eom Ing becomes a plant herself, closes her eyes to sense the light, and envisions it in form of dots, lines, and planes.(<Look the Sun in the Eyes>, 2023) We hope that the exhibition Becoming-Light-Plant provides a special opportunity to connect with plants through activities that allow visitors to encounter real plants in the greenhouse and experience becoming a plant themselves.
